San Francisco, CA: A new space for fine art, Gallery 415, is opening in the premier gallery location of 49 Geary in San Francisco. Gallery 415 is the first gallery in Northern California specializing in contemporary art by emerging and mid-career Latin American artists.
Following Fernando Botero's exhibition "Abu Ghraib" at UC Berkely, Gallery 415 takes the opportunity to open its new space presenting another six contemporary Colombian painters to the Bay Area public; Carlos Jacanamijoy, Luis Luna Matiz, Gerardo Caro, Venuz White, Leonardo Pineda, and Juan Camilo Arango . The exhibition is curated by Natalia Vega, art critic and historian of Latin American art and lecturer at the department of education of the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
The contemporary Colombian painters featured in the opening exhibition at Gallery 415 offer an opportunity to become acquainted with the work of Colombian artists well recognized in their own country and in Latin America, and with exhibitions in both Europe and Asia -- their talent recognized with a variety of awards and in important museum collections. The exhibition also offers an exciting display of several emerging young artists whose production already demonstrates the vitality and potential of a very solid body of work.
Colombia holds a strong tradition in painting, and the underlying element of this exhibition is the various artists' unyielding commitment the medium of painting. After tendencies of decreasing importance, painting has begun to enjoy a revival of unexpected momentum in recent years and the works in this exhibition show that the medium, both stylistically and conceptually, remains as dynamic and flourishing as ever.
Gallery 415 in San Francisco focuses on modern and contemporary art from Latin America. The gallery program challenges the traditional views of Latin American art and showcases the great range of styles, materials, themes and aesthetics in artistic production from this diverse region. The gallery is located in the Union Square area of downtown San Francisco and is open Tuesday-Saturday, 11:00am-5:30pm.
